Business tools for female founders (that you probably don’t need)

It usually starts with one business tool or subscription. You sign up because it promises to make something easier, and other female founders are using it. It’s so hot right now.

Things do feel easier …at first. Then you realise it doesn’t quite do everything you want it to, so you upgrade to the next subscription tier, or scrap it all start Googling again. Then someone you follow recommends something else. Another free trial? Fuck it.

Before you know it, your business is running on a collection of logins, subscriptions, and half-used software you sold your soul (and data for), and you’re not totally sure which one does what anymore.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not doing anything wrong. I see this all the time with the women I work with and female founders I support.

Subscription overload

As a female founder, you probably didn’t sit down, with a coffee and a dream to design your tech stack. Software and subscriptions pile up over time, through reaction with a hint of hopeful desperation. Hoping that this next tool makes you forget all your troubles (come on get happy).

Some problems I see female founders struggling with is things like, feeling they need to respond faster, keep up with new enquires and leads, wanting things to look ‘more professional’, and they’ll try absolutely anything that promises to ‘save them time’.

These impulsive small choices (and subscriptions) stack up, and you end up with a tech set up that blags your head more than when you were doing everything manually.

Less really is more

This is the part no one really talks about. Every new tool that promises to be a game changer adds to your mental load. It’s another dashboard to check, another system to learn, another set of notifications to ignore, and another thing you’re expected to remember how to use.

Female founders are already wearing a hundred hats, and running a business is exhausting enough.Minimalism is in. You need less distractions and more intention.

Meanwhile, the algorithm is telling us it’s the year of “analog” (oh the irony), then quietly nudging you towards yet another piece of software you’ll sign up for and never use.

What you actually need

Instead of asking What tools should I use?, ask yourself:

  • What am I actually trying to make easier here?

  • Where do things currently slow me down?

  • What am I repeating manually every week?

  • What is sucking my will to live?

Garth from Wayne's World quote

Most female founders and businesses owners don’t need more software. They need to do less, better. Not how the internet says you should work. Unplug from the noise on your Instagram feed, and ask yourself “What do I actually need?”

If your tech stack feels heavy, confusing, or like it needs more TLC than your sourdough starter, that’s often a sign it needs simplifying, not expanding.

Nodding along and wondering what the fuck to do next? This is exactly what I help and support female founders with. No pressure to reach out, but if you’d like to have a natter, you can get in touch here.
